Pres. Larry Barthle called the meeting to order at 10:30 AM and the directors approved the minutes from the June 3, 2010 meeting.
Secretary/Treasurer Ricky Booth gave the financial report. He reported that the bank account balance was now $16,067.79.
Mr. Booth also stated that he had mailed out a membership recruitment letter along with a revamped application to all Florida members of the ABBA that are not currently FBA members. The mail out materials were presented to the board for review. An Associate member drive was discussed upon the presentation of the fact that currently the FBA has 0 associate members.
The ad designed by Caballo Rojo Publishing (Steven Kahla) that appeared in the July edition of the AL Cattlemen's Magazine was presented. Ricky Booth also stated that the FBA would have a rate holder ad in the Carolina, Georgia, & Alabama Cattlemen's magazines. Having the rate holder ad would allow the FBA to be eligible for discounted rates for larger advertisements. Marcus Shackelford asked for different pictures to be used in future ads. It was also agreed that the FBA advertise in the October Better Bulls edition of the Florida Cattlemen's magazine.
The passing of long-time Brahman breeder Earl Partin was discussed and it was decided to send flowers on behalf of the FBA.
In George Kempfer's absence Ricky Booth presented information from the ABBA Executive Committee. The committee had decided to place TX Brahman breeder Judd Cullers on probation for numerous show ring violations.
Pres. Barthle gave a report on the Brooksville research station. From his conference calls with Brooksville staff, Pres. Barthle reported that USDA ARS was trying to purchase the cows from UF as they continued their embryo work. The Brooksville staff asked Pres. Barthle to urge board members to push their congressmen for money to keep their research going.
It was presented that the UF BRU would like to purchase 4-6 Brahman heifers for embryo work.
Pres. Barthle began discussion concerning a 2011 field day. Mr. Shackelford made a motion to have the field day at the STARS facility in Brooksville and to appoint Larry Barthle chairman of the field day committee. Second by Ricky Booth. Motion passed unanimously. It was agreed that the fun auction be limited to "big ticket" items that would generate a lot of interest. The board discussed what type of heifer sale to have. Suggestions included F1's, haltered heifers, private treaty, and a combination of any or all. It was decided that FD Chairman Barthle make a sale plan, consult with Joe Butt, and then present to the board for approval.
Marshall Wiseheart from the FDACS sent word that money was available for FL Brahman producers to attend the WBC in Brazil in October.
Pres. Barthle presented the birth weight tapes that were going to be sent out to every ABBA member sometime in the near future.
The FJBA is planning a state show on Nov. 6, 2010 in either Ft. White or Lake City. Joe Butt is working with the juniors and relayed the message.
The question was raised concerning having a trade show booth at the FCA convention in Marco Island. ABBA will split the cost. Mr. Shackelford made a motion to approve, Chris Barthle second, motion passed unanimously. Larry Barthle will help man the booth during the show.
Discussion was had on creating new literature, membership directory, trade show booth, and other advertising options for the FBA. It was decided not to purchase a trade show booth, but to look further into a membership directory and FBA brochure. The board would like to check with Marshall Wiseheart on any cost share programs that may be available.
The board approved a FL Brahman Co-op page in the Brahman Journal. Advertising members are: Rocking S Ranch, Ford Farms, Doc Partin Ranch, Bar Crescent D, Barthle Bros., Register's Sawmill, Double C Bar, Beville Ranch, Gray Shadow, Candler Cattle Co., & Heart Bar #4. The ad will be open to any FBA breeder member located in Florida.
Ricky Booth presented a proposal to offer a $25 discount to any member that wished to be part of the Brahman Review Florida directory. The cost for one year(4 issues) is $100. Larry Ford make a motion to accept, Sean Sexton second, motion passed.
It was discussed that the board sponsor the junior state show at $500. Markus Shackelford made a motion to sponsor, Larry Ford second, motion passed unanimously.
Discussion was had on sponsoring the FCA Ranch Rodeo Finals. It was decided not to sponsor the event.
Ricky Booth make a motion to adjourn, Sean Sexton second. Meeting was adjourned at 12:40 PM.
